Slidell's proposal : ウィキペディア英語版 | Slidell's proposal
In 1846 John Slidell was sent by United States president James Knox Polk to negotiate with Mexico on various disputed boundaries and lands arising in connection with the U.S. annexation of the Republic of Texas. Slidell was accompanied by General Zachary Taylor to negotiate with Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna. Slidell's Proposal would have made the Texan-Mexican border the Rio Grande, as opposed to the Nueces River, which was considered by Mexico to be the active border. Slidell's Proposal would have also purchased a large portion of Mexico's North American territory, consisting of what is currently the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, for $15 million. The proposal was rejected by the Mexican government, and the United States was pushed closer to the brink of the Mexican American War of 1848, which some regarded as a fulfillment of Manifest destiny.
